About This Year’s Color of the Year Selection

Spoiler alert! This year’s color of the year is actually TWO colors! “The selection of two independent colors highlights how different elements come together to express a message of strength and hopefulness that is both enduring and uplifting, conveying the idea that it’s not about one color or one person; it’s about more than one,” noted Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute. The colors are a “marriage of strength and optimism” that combine warm and cool tones: PANTONE 17-5104 Ultimate Gray and PANTONE 13-0647 Illuminating. The gray evokes a sense of solid and dependable natural elements with a weathered look, such as pebbles on a beach or weather-worn barnwood. The yellow is bright, cheerful, and vivacious, evoking a sense of the solar power of the sun.

What Color Tells Us

“The Pantone Color of the Year reflects what is taking place in our global culture, expressing what people are looking for that color can hope to answer,” said Laurie Pressman, vice president of the Pantone Color Institute. Color is not a designer’s whim. Color trends come from where we are, where we want to go, and how people are feeling or not feeling. For example, when we see younger criminals and attacks on countries and air travel, we are afraid and popular color becomes lighter, softer, and safer. “As people look for ways to fortify themselves with energy, clarity, and hope to overcome the continuing uncertainty, spirited and emboldening shades satisfy our quest for vitality.”

Using Ultimate Gray and Illuminating in the Home

These colors can set the mood in any room, bringing a ray of sunshine and a drop of positivity. You can add these colors through bedding, tableware, and accessories such as throw pillows and blankets. Or you can add paint in both colors to an accent wall or entryway to convey a welcoming message. These colors would also be great in a home office, to heighten awareness and enhance intuition as well as intellectual curiosity, originality, and resourcefulness. Another way to bring them into the home is through window fashions or coordinating side panels and drapery.
